Indian social activist Anna Hazare―best known for his 2011 anti-corruption movement―has said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has lost the trust of the people of Delhi. Speaking to reporters in Ralegan Siddhi village, Hazare said that the AAP lost because it “failed to understand the need to serve the people selflessly”.

“Money took the front seat which dented the AAP’s image, leading to its defeat,” he said.

Hazare’s comments against the AAP has come a full circle, especially since it was the Anna Andolan which catapulted Kejriwal into national spotlight and ultimately led to the formation of the AAP.

The Rise And Fall Of Arvind Kejriwal

Kejriwal rose to national prominence due to his involvement in the anti-corruption movement led by Hazare. However, in 2012, Hazare and Kejriwal parted ways after the latter decided to form the AAP.

While Hazare felt it was important to stay politically “unaligned” to root out corruption, Kejriwal felt there was a need for proper government representation.

With his reputation as the “muffler man”, Kejriwal and the AAP proceeded to form the government in Delhi, bringing an end to the Congress’ 15-year reign in the national capital.

From 2015 onwards, the AAP, led by Kejriwal, has swept Delhi in assembly elections, securing a majority and ensuring developmental work at the grassroots level.

In 2017, Hazare once again reiterated that he does not have a relationship with Kejriwal. Speaking to reporters in Agra eight years ago, Hazare added that he “was not aware what the AAP leader had in mind when he was part of the anti-corruption agitation in 2011”.

The AAP has been in power in Delhi for the past 10 years. Now they have been ousted by the BJP. While the BJP’s win was not surprising, considering their clean sweep in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections,og777 casino the results have come as a major upset for the AAP.

As per Hazare, AAP’s loss is also due to the allegations against Kejriwal and other AAP leaders in the 2021 liquor policy scam.

Kejriwal was arrested by the Directorate of Enforcement and the Central Bureau of Investigation in March 2024 due to allegations against him in the excise policy case. Making history―as the first sitting chief minister to be arrested by central agencies―the Delhi leader was granted interim bail to campaign for the Lok Sabha elections.

However, in the general elections, the AAP, which had formed an alliance with the Congress, lost to the BJP, which swept all seven seats in the capital. After the elections, he returned to Tihar Jail and was ultimately let out on bail by the Supreme Court in September 2024, after serving five months in jail.

“With the liquor policy issue, came the money, and they drowned in it. The (AAP’s) image was tarnished. People saw him (Kejriwal) talking about clean character and then about liquor,” said Hazare.

“I have been saying this since the beginning that when one contests polls, the candidate’s character should be clean and spotless. The candidate should know the virtues of sacrifice and should have the capacity to tolerate insults. These qualities (in candidates) win the people’s trust. They feel the candidate will do something for them. I have kept saying this, but they (the AAP) did not understand it,” he added.

Kejriwal Concedes Defeat

Kejriwal, who was eyeing another term as chief minister, lost from the New Delhi seat to the BJP’s Parvesh Singh Verma by over 4,000 votes.

“We accept the mandate of the people with great humility. I congratulate the BJP for this victory and I hope they will fulfil all the promises for which people have voted them,” said Kejriwal, adding that the AAP has “done a lot of work in the field of health7bet gaming or sevenbet, education and infrastructure in the last 10 years. The former CM extended his congratulations to the BJP for its sweeping victory in the national capital.
